Outstanding Educational Leader Announced as Carmel's Next Principal
91 is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Julie Harris as the new Principal, commencing in January 2022. This appointment follows an extensive search resulting in a very strong field of candidates from many of the leading independent schools in WA and Australia. Dr Harris will take over this leadership role from Mrs Shula Lazar, who has ably led the School for 6 years. Mrs Lazar is returning to Melbourne to take up the position of Principal at LeiblerYavnehCollege.
Dr Harris brings to Carmel an outstanding educational leadership background, built on local and international experience. She is regarded as one of the foremost experts in teaching and learning in WA, with extensive experience at other high performing schools. Dr Harris completed her PhD in Education in 2014, herthesis enabling her to directly influence classroom practice. Her local teaching experience spans Guildford Grammar School, Christ Church Grammar School and St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls, where she has held teaching positions in Science and, most recently, leadership positions in pedagogy development and teaching and learning. Alongside her teaching experience, Dr Harris has worked with the West Coast Eagles coaching team as a ‘teacher of teachers’. Those who have worked with Dr Harris describe her as passionate about learning, an exceptional communicator and one of the best teachers in the industry.
In her own words, Dr Harris asserts that “education is the vocation through which I have chosen to make a difference.” Speaking on her move to 91, she said “I feel honoured to have the privilege of leading 91 from 2022. I have a lot to learn and a lot to contribute; I have no doubt that it will be a fabulous experience. I can’t wait to meet the teachers and students who make the School a wonderful place to learn.”
Carmel Board President, Debbie Silbert said of the search for a new Principal, “Our selection process aimed to find a world-class educational leader who is a strong communicator, and who can connect with all aspects of the PerthJewish and wider community. We also sought out an individual with the creativity and leadership skills needed to build upon the strong position our School is in now for the benefit of current and future students and families. In Dr Harris, we have found these attributes and we are thrilled she is joining our School.”
A committed life-long learner, Dr Harris is excited to learn more about the School, the Perth Jewish community and Judaism more broadly. The School and wider community looks forward to warmly welcoming her to the team. Dr Harris will commence at Carmel in January 2022.
